Local Towns and Historical Sites

The surrounding area and local towns of Lismore, Dungarvan, Ardmore and Youghal provide a wide variety of interesting monuments, castles and gardens to visit ... and for those interested in visiting Blarney, the Rock of Cashel, Killarney or the old city of Kilkenny, all are within 2 hours drive. Waterford City is only 45 minutes and Cork City 1 hour by car.
   
   
- Dungarvan (10 minutes from Cappagh) – Dungarvan is just 5 miles from Cappagh and is a buzzing little town offering shops and amenities including a helpful tourist information centre, an arts centre, sailing club, and some great pubs, cafes and restaurants. There is a Farmers Market in the town square every Thursday morning and a Country Market on Fridays in the local tennis club. Other facilities and attractions include a modern library (with internet access), cinema, the newly restored Dungarvan Castle, a museum and new shopping centre. - Mount Mellary Abbey (15 minutes from Cappagh) – This monastery was originally founded in 1832. Magnificent setting in the hills above Cappoquin, below the Knockmealdown mountains. Tel: 058 44044.

Archery – There is a traditional 3D field archery course in one of the woods on our land at Cappagh which was set up by the Deise Archery Club. The club use this on alternate Sunday mornings and they have 2 qualified coaches who can also provide equipment for instruction. If you are interested in private tuition, please contact us and we will put you in touch with an instructor who can give you further information, timing and fees.

- Hunting – West Waterford is home to four hunting packs: The Dungarvan Farmers, The Dungarvan Harriers,
the West Waterford Hunt and the Dungarvan Foxhounds. Horses can be hired for days hunting,
arrangements for this would need to be made in advance.


Fishing / Boat Trips – This area is a fisherman’s paradise with it’s abundance of clean rivers, lakes and miles of beautiful coastline, all in a temperate climate. The Colligan River is nearby, as is the River Blackwater - famous for its salmon fishing and coarse fishing is available at Cappoquin (just 5 minutes away). Sea angling can be organised in Dungarvan. Walking – Guests are welcome to walk through the woods and over the farmland at Cappagh and there is Coillte Forestry behind the estate for further walking. There are also many wonderful walks in the area, a few of which are listed below. For more serious walkers, the nearby Comeragh Mountains and Nire Valley provide a remarkably varied range stretching from the coast near Dungarvan inland as far as Clonmel.
- Some local woodland, river and coastal walks:
- Glen Shelane, Cappoquin. River and woodland. Several routes, for short or long version.
- Colligan Woods. (Similar to above, another lovely river and more woodland!)
- The Towers – above Lismore on the road to Ballyduff.
- Lady Louisa’s Walk – by the River Blackwater at Lismore
- Mahon Falls – spectacular walk to waterfalls.
- Ardmore Coastal/Cliff Walk (St Declan’s Way) – circular walk from the historic village of Ardmore,
stunning scenery.
(St Declan’s Way continues on all the way to the celebrated Rock of Cashel)
- The Cunnigar, Ring. A wonderful walk on a mile long ‘spit’ across Dungarvan Bay where you will see
lots of bird life.
This is a favourite of ours and you can walk on sand or grass land.
